Some Tips About Mediation1. Try to get plenty of rest and eat a meal before you come to mediation so that you will not be distracted by being tired or hungry. It is very important to be able to concentrate, sometimes for several hours. Snacks and beverages are available throughout the day. If your mediation extends through a mealtime, it is usually best to not stop the mediation, but arrangements can be made to bring in food. 2. If you need a break during the mediation to use the restroom, to smoke, to take medication, or simply clear your head, make that known to your attorney, if present, or to the mediator. 3. Think ahead about what you want to accomplish during the mediation. Make a list of your goals ahead of time. Remind yourself of your goals if things get difficult during mediation, and make an effort to get back on track. 4. Carefully review the handout, "building negotiation skills," for helpful suggestions on how to make mediation work for you. 5. Mediation costs $150 to $250 for each hour of mediation. This cost is usually shared equally by the parties. You will make that payment at the end of each mediation session, so bring your checkbook or credit card.
